How It Works
The Get Real Game is
designed as a journey. Each session represents a step of the journey, and each
subsequent step builds on the previous one. The journey is divided into 13
sessions, which are then divided into activity and discussion segments.
Session One:
Real Transition Students are introduced to The Get Real
Game and begin to choose the roles they will explore throughout the
program. (about 60 minutes)
Session Two:
Real Jobs Students narrow their work role preferences, using
a structured process to sift options from eight work clusters, eventually
selecting the roles they will assume for the balance of the program. (about 60
minutes)
Session
Three: Real Gateways Students are introduced to The High Five
principles, form the groups in which they will experience the entire program,
and learn about the career gateways that can take from secondary school to their
adult life. (about 60 minutes)
Session Four:
The Real Role Students receive an in-depth introduction to
their chosen Role Profiles and learn how they will be used throughout
The Get Real Game. They choose education and training goals for their
characters and make their first gateway choices. (about 60 minutes)
Session Five:
The High School Spin Game Students explore the
components of the High School Spin Game as they role-play a character
attempting to graduate from high school. They have fun while dealing with real
issues students face in high school. (about 60 minutes)
Session Six:
The Transition Spin Game-I Students play the first
round of the Transition Spin Game. This simulates the experiences that
their characters encountered during their first two to three years after high
school. They are introduced to the concepts of career building and networking.
(about 60 minutes)
Session Seven: Time and
Transition-I Students reflect on their work, education and
training, personal and community experiences that their characters encountered
during their first two to three years after high school. They create time lines
allocating a period of time to each experience. (about 60 minutes)
Session Eight: The Transition Spin
Game-II Students play the second round of the
Transition Spin Game. This simulates the experiences that their
characters encountered during their third to fifth years after high school. They
further explore the concepts of career building and networking. (about 60
minutes)
Session Nine: Time and
Transition-II Students reflect on the work, education and
training, personal and community experiences that their characters encountered
during their third to fifth years after high school. They continue their time
lines, allocating a period of time to each experience, and then choose interview
goals for their characters. (about 60 minutes)
Session Ten: Preparing for the
Interview Students create scenarios for their characters to
explain the acquisition of essential skills identified from their life/work
experiences. They participate in mock interviews within their groups, and
endeavor to achieve the interview goals they have chosen for their characters.
One student from each group is chosen for an interview by another group in the
next session. (about 60 minutes)
Session Eleven: The
Interview One student from each group is interviewed by
another group to determine if she or he has acquired the required education,
experience and skills to successfully achieve the interview goal. The entire
class observes the five interviews which each last about five minutes.
(about 60 minutes)
Session Twelve: Preparing for
Transition Using knowledge gained from their Get Real
Game experience, students prepare to create their own Real Transition
Plans, which begin with their first year after high school graduation.
(about 60 minutes)
Session Thirteen: Creating A Real Action
Plan Students create their own one-year Action Plan
and Budget Plan At the end of this session, they receive a
Certificate of Completion. (about 60 minutes)
